India Edge Uruguay 3-2 to Complete Perfect Group Stage and Reach FIH Women’s Nations Cup Semifinals
India defeated Uruguay 3-2 in the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in New Zealand to complete a perfect group stage campaign with three wins from three matches. Deepika scored twice while Deepika Soreng added another goal as India topped Pool A and advanced to the semifinals. The match also marked Neha’s 200th international appearance for the country.
After conceding an early goal, the Indian team mounted a spirited comeback with Deepika scoring twice and Deepika Soreng contributing another goal to seal the hard-fought victory.
Uruguay opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Chiara Appennino, putting India under pressure in the early stages of the contest. India responded in the second quarter when Deepika converted a penalty corner in the 24th minute to restore parity.
The momentum shifted in India's favour in the 43rd minute when Deepika Soreng found the net with a field goal to hand her side the lead. However, Uruguay captain Manuela Vilar equalised in the 55th minute, setting up a tense finish. India regained the advantage just a minute later as Deepika struck her second goal of the match, ensuring a 3-2 victory and preserving India's unbeaten record in the group stage.
With three victories from three matches, India finished on top of Pool A and advanced to the semifinals. The Indian side will now face the winner of the encounter between Chile and Korea on June 20.
The match also marked a major milestone for Neha, who completed 200 international appearances for India. The achievement added further significance to a memorable day as India maintained their perfect campaign and strengthened their hopes of lifting the FIH Women’s Nations Cup title.
